The aim of this book is to give some background information to students who are approaching philosophy for the first time. As such, it is not intended to be an introduction to philosophy textbook, but more as a companion to a philosophy introductory course or book. Too many students, in my view, complete their introductory philosophy course without an adequate knowledge about the subject in general.
There is no doubt of course that having taken a philosophy course they will form a good idea what the subject is about, and what it tries to achieve. But they are more likely than not to leave the course with a vague idea as to its long and varied history, the questions surrounding the very nature of the subject itself, about its various branches and sub-branches etc.
The chapters in this book deal with these and other topics that are generally touched upon, but rarely expanded on, in a typical introductory course of philosophy. They would perhaps be given a lecture or two at the beginning of the course. But these topics are almost never considered important enough to be the subject for further lecture or discussion. Yet, I believe that students' understanding of philosophy would be enhanced, and they would encounter less confusion and uncertainty, if they are given information on the topics discussed in this book. In the first chapter, I have outlined the great philosophers' conceptions of philosophy. In doing so, my aim was to show that philosophy is an ever-evolving subject which admits of no final and unanimous definition.

I appreciate this concise book because it is an accurate reflection of the essentials of the particular philosophies introduced. For anyone wanting to get some insight on western philosophy, this book is a great place to start.
This book is very thorough, and carefully written. Its language is very accessible. It does a great job of covering apparently every essential Western philosopher, philosophical trend, and philosophical school of thought (and their respective time periods). Moreover, it explains which Ancient philosophers had “academies”; which is very interesting given that they seem to have been the precursors to contemporary society’s ubiquitous University system. This book is great as a quick reference guide for the above information (and more), which can be essential information to researchers. Since it gives only minimal information about its topics (so as to keep the book very short), it is merely a launching pad for students just being introduced to the subject of Western philosophy, and to researchers needing a quick reference guide for certain parts of the history of Western philosophy. Both students and researchers are quickly (and aptly) guided in the direction that they should go for more detailed study on any essential part of the history of Western philosophy. In short, it is a very well done, efficient, outline of the history, places philosophy is done, and writing styles of Western philosophy. With it you will always know where you are in the “forest” that is Western philosophy.
Appendix One, Classics of Western Philosophy is very helpful. It lists, in chronological order, the philosophers, and the major works of those philosophers, that make up a significant part of the canon in Western Philosophy. This is very helpful as a guide to both students and researchers.
Appendix Two, Essential Reference Books, is also very helpful. It provides probably all of the best Introductions to Western Philosophy, Histories of Western Philosophy, Dictionaries of Western Philosophy, Encyclopedias of Western Philosophy, Guides to Writing in the style of Western Philosophy, and helpful websites for Western Philosophy.
